Photo Guide to: Santo Tomás de Castilla, Guatemala (Family Tour!)

Are you visiting Santo Tomás de Castilla, Guatemala any time soon, or do you have a desire to visit this beautiful country?  Check out the video guide I made below and see what there is to see!

This is primarily a shipping port, so if you are visiting via cruise ship, this is the port you should book an excursion on.  There are plenty of things to do if you are willing to drive around an hour or so away from the port.  We did one of the cheapest options, which is a $25pp tour of the city.  It was very eye opening!  You can tell these people are not used to a lot of visitors.

I hope this video is useful to anyone who watches it.

Grand Cayman - Island Tour (perfect for the whole family!)

Are you traveling to Grand Cayman soon?  There are a lot of fun and exciting things to do on this island, so choosing an excursion could be difficult.

If you are on a budget, then an island tour might be the perfect tour for you.  My family of 4 did this tour for a cost of about $15-$20 USD a person, which is substantially cheaper than what the cruise line wanted to charge for the same excursion.  The sellers on the pier were extremely competitive in trying to get our business, with the different tour operators going lower in price than the one who previously quoted us.  So don't jump at the first offer you hear, shop around for only a minute and you are bound to save $5 or more per person.

Below is a video photograph tour showing some of the sights you can expect on a tour of Grand Cayman.  Your guide will take you past interesting houses such as the governor's mansion, how the locals live, a stop at the Tortuga Rum Co. where you can sample rum and rum cake, the dolphin discovery (and the turtle farm, right across the street), and ends at 7 mile beach.  You can stay here for the rest of your day, or the tour does include a drop off back at the pier.

Please enjoy!  And if you can, leave me a comment letting me know what you thought of the video, or if you have been to Grand Cayman, what was your favorite thing to do.

Don't forget a thumbs up! :)

How to Get a Refund of Service Charges on Norwegian Cruise Line

If you are like me, you went aboard your cruise thinking you could adjust your service charges while on your cruise.

NOTICE: You cannot do this while aboard your cruise!

Instead, they will give you a form and tell you that you can request a refund once your cruise is actually over.  This was mind blowing to me...not to be able to adjust your tips while your cruise is actually happening?

To help you avoid the hassle I went through (almost 1.5 months!) to get my refund, I made a video that I think will help you out:

Hopefully this will help you out, and make getting money back easier when cruising Norwegian.

Please like my video on YouTube, and let me know if you have any questions.

Belize City: Tour by Horse-drawn Carriage

Slowly but surely I will be posting things from my cruise in May.

One of my favorite places to stop is Belize!  This country is extremely diverse in possible shore excursions when your cruise ship arrives. Cave tubing, ancient ruins, city tours, submarines, zip lines... you name it and you can probably find it here.

For those of you who spent all your money just taking the cruise, relax!  There are cheap excursions you can do here.  My group of 4 did a horse drawn carriage ride around the city.  It was about an hour, hour and a half long and was $30 for the 4 of us.  That was a pretty good deal, considering the same type of excursion through a cruise line would be $30 per person.

Check out the video below for pictures taken during the excursion and for photos around the dock that cruise line guests get to enjoy while in Belize City.

Enjoy!

Skagway, Alaska - White Pass Summit Railway Excursion

Skagway, Alaska is a popular stop included in almost every cruise that tours the inside passage of Alaska.  With a population of only about 920 during the off-season, you would think a small town like this doesn't have much to offer tourists, but Skagway is full of secrets and sights just waiting for you.

(Scroll to the very bottom for a short video of this train excursion!)

It won't take you long to walk through this picturesque town, but there are plenty of things to see and do.  My family decided to take the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway excursion when we stopped by on our cruise aboard the Disney Wonder in May of 2014, and it did not disappoint!  As you can see in the map below, the rail tour literally picks you up right on the dock by your ship.

While some people see bears and other wildlife on this excursion, on this trip my family did not see any of those things.  What we did see, however, was the incredible blue, sunny sky which made for some incredible pictures!  It rains quite a bit here, so the weather really was perfect.  You sit inside the train, on seats that can flip up and face the other direction, so it doesn't matter what side of the train you sit on, you will have a different view going back down the track.

You are also allowed to stand outside between the cars as well, which is where I spent about 90% of the trip, snapping pictures left and right!

Our particular excursion was the White Pass Summit Excursion, described on their website (found here) as:

This forty mile round trip excursion climbs from tidewater at Skagway to the Summit of the White Pass - a 2,865 foot elevation. The fully narrated tour passes through two tunnels, over sky-high trestles and cascading waterfalls. It’s our most popular rail trip!

The excursion included the following:
  • Fares: $119 Adult and $59.50 Child
  • Tour Duration: 3 to 3.5 Hours
  • No passport required
  • All Summit Excursion trains are wheelchair accessible. However, space is limited in lift-equipped cars. Please let us know when reserving your seats if you or anyone in your party will require the lift to get onto the train.
  • Complimentary Bottled Water

After the tour we still had plenty of time to explore around town and do a little shopping.  There are some pretty neat things to see in Skagway, so enjoy your time here.  Let me know if you have any questions in the comments :)

Enjoy this video I took at the summit :)

Georgetown, Grand Cayman - Seaworld Observatory ($45), Self "Walking Tour"
In my opinion, Grand Cayman offered the least amount of "things to do" while in this port.  They do have a pretty extensive shopping area that is very close to the ship, but other than that, if you want to see Georgetown, you'd better take a taxi or tour.

That being said, my sister and I decided we spent enough money on the other two tours we took, and opted to just do our own walking tour of the island.  Our parents decided they would do the Seaworld Observatory last minute; I think they booked this tour on the ship around 11:00, and there were still spaces and tours available.

We exited the ship together, around 11:30; the ship didn't arrive in Grand Cayman until about 10:30am.  My sister and I took off towards the stores, while our parents headed off to their boat ride.  The mall is pretty interesting; it's mostly along Harbour Dr/North Church Street and in that general area.  We walked down towards the Harley Davidson store, then cut inland a bit, eventually making a loop past the Police Station.  Along the way there are lots of stores you will pass; upstairs, downstairs, hidden in corners and along side streets.

We decided after we were done shopping we wanted to find a beach.  We aren't big shoppers; we spent only about an hour walking around various stores and bought a few magnets.  So we started walking along Church Street, because my sister is pretty sure she saw a beach that way from the cruise ship.  I knew from research that there were some beaches near the port, but I was also 99% confident that you would have to take a taxi to reach them.  We walked for about half a mile before we ran into a Burger King.  I was super thirsty, so I decided we could stop inside and buy a drink.  This is probably the nicest Burger King I have ever been in.  I ended up spending $5 on a huge drink (I gave them
American, but I got change back in a Caymanian dollar, which is worth $0.82 to our $1.00 USD).  It was worth it, though, to soak in the view from this BK on the edge of the island.  The interior was tastefully decorated in a beach style, with pale blue accents.  That and the air conditioning made us sit in here for about 30 minutes before we decided that we would never reach a real beach and head back to the ship.  To the left you can see part of the view this BK had; this particular image is taken looking off to the left of the restaurant.

We actually did find a very small beach along this street.  It was nothing to write home about, but it was still neat to discover this tiny sandy area that no one else was using.  We also met a very kind German couple who was sailing on a different cruise line than us.  They didn't speak very much English, but we shared the few words in German that we knew (they were ecstatic that we knew any at all) and asked us if we could collect a bit of sand for them, which we did.

One cool thing, a favorite store of ours was actually right in the main port area.  On the way back to the cruise ship, we stopped and looked around the stores in this area.  There is a fence with security that you must pass through before you enter the ship.  Inside this area is a handful of stores and some outdoor vendors selling things like iced coconuts and wind chimes.  This particular store we enjoyed was called It*Sugar.  It was basically a huge candy store that sold every variety of candy you could think of, as well as over sized candy items, such as the Hershey's Syrup bank you see my sister hugging to the left.

We love Hershey's Syrup :)

They had bulk dispenser bins where you could buy all kinds of candy, as well.  While things were slightly over priced, I just reminded myself how far this stuff had to come from wherever it was manufactured.  I bought this really cool side bag that looks like a jolly rancher for only $20; it was 50% off.  So look around for the clearance stuff!

(As a side note, my Indiana Jones hat actually kept me quite shaded.  I recommend wearing a hat with a brim to keep your face out of the sun!)

Seaworld Observatory Semi Submarine
I made sure to give my mom my spare camera so she could take some pictures on their excursion.  We have been on the Atlantis Submarine in Hawaii, which goes down about 110 feet or so.  My parents felt so-so about that submarine (thinking about that much water overhead...) but said this one was by far much better.  You don't have to worry about 100 feet of water between you and the surface.  You actually descend into the hull of the ship, which has windows for viewing sea life.

During the 50 minute ride, they take you around to various reefs and shipwrecks.  Employees also came around multiple times and offered to use your camera and take a picture of you (as you can see in the above picture).  They also had divers who would go out and feed the fish, to get them to come out of hiding for you to take pictures of. My parents loved this excursion, and really wished that my sister and I had decided to take it with them.  My mom said this would be great for families, as little kids would be entertained looking out the big windows for all kinds of sea animals.
